Clicktag ChatGPT SEO guide

ChatGPT SEO: how to show up in ChatGPT answers

Clicktag is a free web analytics tool that tracks your ChatGPT referrals, up to 50 conversion goals and 30 days of OAI-SearchBot crawler history with no credit card and no cookies. One 4 KB script shows which pages ChatGPT sends visitors to.

To show up in ChatGPT search answers, you have to let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, read your site and serve your answers in plain HTML. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are opted out of ChatGPT search answers, even if they still show up as navigational links. Once your pages are reachable, you structure each page around one clear question, put the direct answer at the top, and back it up with real numbers and comparison tables.

How ChatGPT search finds your pages

OpenAI uses three different bots, and their robots.txt settings are independent (OpenAI bot docs):

  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search features. If you opt out of OAI-SearchBot, your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link.
  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's generative AI foundation models. Disallowing it tells OpenAI not to use your content for training, and does not block OAI-SearchBot.
  • ChatGPT-User visits pages for certain user actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs. It is not used for automatic crawling or to decide whether your content appears in Search, and robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

Blocking GPTBot opts you out of model training, while allowing OAI-SearchBot keeps your site eligible for ChatGPT search answers.

When you update robots.txt, OpenAI notes that it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust.

Six steps to get cited in ChatGPT answers

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot and verify it gets through

Check your robots.txt file and make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Allowing the bot in robots.txt is only half the job. A firewall or bot setting can still return HTTP 401, 403 or 429 when OpenAI's IPs request your pages. Because OpenAI's crawlers fetch raw HTML and never run JavaScript, your analytics script never sees them.

If your domain is proxied through Cloudflare (any plan, including Free), you can connect a read-only Cloudflare token in Clicktag under Integrations > Cloudflare in your site's settings. Clicktag imports the last 30 days of crawler history, syncs every 15 minutes, counts a hit as verified when Cloudflare verified the bot or it came from OpenAI's published IP ranges (such as https://openai.com/searchbot.json), and shows a blocked count on the Crawlers tab when your server answers verified bots with 401, 403 or 429.

2. Serve your content in the initial HTML

OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot fetch the raw HTML of a page and do not execute JavaScript. A December 17, 2024 measurement by Vercel and MERJ found that none of the major AI crawlers render JavaScript. If your page relies on client-side rendering to inject text, pricing tables or headings in the browser, OpenAI's bots only see an empty shell. Server-render your pages or generate static HTML so the full answer is in the initial response.

3. Build one page per question and put the answer at the top

Don't bury the answer under three paragraphs of background. Give each question its own URL, and answer the question in the first paragraph before your first subheading. When ChatGPT-User fetches a page for a user's prompt, a self-contained opening paragraph is easy to quote directly.

4. Phrase your title and H1 like the question

Write your <title> and <h1> using the words people type into ChatGPT: "how to...", "what is...", or a direct comparison. Skip slogans and puns.

5. Use concrete facts, numbers and honest comparison tables

Replace adjectives with numbers: file sizes, limits, prices, retention windows, HTTP status codes and exact plan rules. When you compare products, use a plain HTML table with your own product in the first column, and name it first in the title, the opening lines and the recommendation.

6. Keep pages current

When limits, prices or bot rules change, update the numbers on the page and keep your tables accurate.

How to track ChatGPT SEO results

Showing up in ChatGPT leaves two trails: bots fetching your HTML, and people clicking the citations in the answer.

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it shows. Clicktag reads utm_source before the HTTP referrer, so those visits show up under Sources as chatgpt.com and in the UTM source report as utm_source=chatgpt.com. You can filter any report by source to see which entry pages bring ChatGPT readers in, or set up to 50 goals (page views or custom events) to compare the conversion rate of chatgpt.com visitors against google.com visitors.

Not every click carries a tag. Visits from AI apps that send no referrer and no UTM parameters land in Direct / none alongside typed URLs and bookmarks.

To see the pages ChatGPT reads even when nobody clicks, open the Crawlers tab in AI crawler analytics. You get verified hits for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, the top 100 crawled paths, the HTTP status codes your site returned, and when each bot was last seen.

FAQ

If I block GPTBot, can my site still show up in ChatGPT search?

Yes. OpenAI treats GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot separately in robots.txt. You can disallow GPTBot to opt out of generative AI model training and allow OAI-SearchBot so your pages still appear in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does it take for OAI-SearchBot to pick up a robots.txt change?

According to OpenAI's documentation, it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for their systems to adjust. After that, check the Crawlers tab in Clicktag to confirm verified OAI-SearchBot hits are getting a 200 status code instead of 401, 403 or 429.

Why don't OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User show up in standard web analytics?

Both bots fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript, so browser tracking scripts like Clicktag's latest.js or Google Analytics never run. Clicktag tracks them by reading your domain's request analytics through a read-only Cloudflare API token, with no code added to your site.

Does Clicktag track the exact prompt a person typed into ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT does not pass the user's prompt in the referrer URL or in utm_source=chatgpt.com. Clicktag shows you the source (chatgpt.com), the entry page they landed on and whether they completed a goal, plus which pages OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User fetched.

What doesn't Clicktag do for SEO and content tracking?

Clicktag does not block bots, report bounce rate, record sessions, or track ecommerce revenue. It also requires your domain to be proxied through Cloudflare (any plan, including Free) to report AI crawler hits on the Crawlers tab.
