Clicktag vs PostHog
Clicktag: a simpler PostHog alternative for website analytics
Clicktag is a free web analytics tool that tracks traffic, custom events, up to 50 goals, 2 to 6 step funnels, and weekly retention cohorts from one 4 KB script, with no cookies and no credit card.
PostHog is a full product suite that bundles analytics events, session recordings, feature flags, experiments, error tracking, logs, and surveys into one metered platform. If you only want to measure website traffic, sources, conversions, and weekly retention without managing monthly usage meters, Clicktag is a simpler alternative. You drop in one 4 KB script that sets no cookies, and get every feature for free across up to 50 websites per account.
How PostHog pricing and free limits work
PostHog gives every account the same free allowance each month. On the free plan, you get 1 project, 1-year data retention, and 1 month of recordings retention, and usage stops when you hit the monthly limits.
PostHog's pay-as-you-go plan keeps the same monthly free allowances and charges for usage above them, with 6 projects and 7-year data retention.
PostHog's free monthly allowances include:
- 1M analytics events
- 5K session recordings
- 1M feature flag requests
- 100K exceptions
- 1,500 survey responses
- 10 GB logs
What you get with Clicktag for web analytics
Clicktag focuses on website analytics and API monitoring rather than in-app developer tooling. There is no paid plan today and no credit card prompt. You sign in with a Google account at clicktag.app and can add up to 50 websites.
With one async script tag (latest.js, about 4 KB compressed), Clicktag tracks single-page app navigation through pushState and popstate automatically. It sets no cookies, uses no local storage, and never stores IP addresses. Visitors are counted using a daily salted SHA-256 hash where the salt is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends, so visits cannot be linked across days.
Instead of configuring a workspace from scratch, you get ready-made reports right away:
- Traffic breakdowns by pages, entry pages, sources, countries, devices, browsers, operating systems, UTM source, UTM medium, and UTM campaign, with up to 12 filters at once.
- AI referral sources separated clearly, with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot showing up as their own sources.
- Custom event tracking in the browser via
window.tt_eventor from your backend viaPOST /events. - Up to 50 goals per site, including funnel analytics of 2 to 6 steps completed in order on the same UTC day, showing median and p90 time to convert.
- Weekly cohort retention for up to 12 follow-up weeks, counted via a once-a-day return check in the browser's HTTP cache without cookies.
- Google Search Console integration that backfills up to 16 months of clicks, impressions, CTR, position, and queries.
- Cloudflare AI crawler tracking (in the Crawlers tab) and API analytics for monitoring request volume, errors, and latency by route on your backend.

Tracking custom events and funnels in Clicktag
latest.js does not record clicks, outbound links, file downloads, or form submissions automatically. When you want to track an action, you call window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback) in the browser, or send one JSON POST /events from your server with no API key required.
<button id="upgrade-btn">Upgrade Plan</button>
<script>
document.getElementById("upgrade-btn").addEventListener("click", function () {
if (typeof window.tt_event === "function") {
window.tt_event("upgrade_clicked", { tier: "pro", period: "annual" });
}
});
</script>
Use short lowercase snake_case names; Clicktag cuts event names at 256 characters and metadata at 4,096 characters. Because Clicktag stores metadata without grouping or filtering by it in reports or the API, put the detail you want to compare directly into the event name (or read the full custom events documentation).
Once events and pageviews are flowing, you can turn any pageview or custom event into a goal, or build a 2 to 6 step funnel. Goals are computed from data you already collect, so creating a new goal includes your past traffic immediately.
Clicktag calculates new goals and funnels against the pageviews and events you have already collected, so you do not have to wait for new traffic after adding a goal.
Clicktag or PostHog: which to pick
Pick Clicktag for website and SaaS analytics: traffic sources, up to 50 goals and funnels per site, weekly cohorts and API monitoring for up to 50 websites, with no usage-based billing and no cookies. PostHog's free plan covers 1 project and 1M analytics events a month.
PostHog is a developer platform for inspecting individual users inside a web app: session recordings, heatmaps, feature flags, A/B experiments, person profiles, exception tracking, application logs, surveys and self-hosting. If you're comparing tools in that category, see our Mixpanel alternative guide.
How to switch to Clicktag from PostHog
Clicktag only supports historical imports from Simple Analytics and does not support CSV uploads or PostHog data imports. To move over, add Clicktag alongside your existing setup so you can build up history before removing PostHog:
- Sign in at clicktag.app with your Google account and click Add site.
- Copy the 4 KB
latest.jsscript tag from Site settings > Installation and add it to your site's HTML. - Verify your site via the
data-verifyattribute in the server-rendered homepage HTML, a DNS TXT record, or a file under/.well-known/. - Add
window.tt_eventcalls alongside your existing tracking calls for the actions you want to measure as goals or funnel steps.
FAQ
Can Clicktag import my historical PostHog data?
No. Clicktag only imports historical data from Simple Analytics and does not support CSV uploads or PostHog imports. We recommend adding Clicktag's 4 KB script alongside PostHog while you build up your initial traffic history.
Does Clicktag include session replay, heatmaps, or feature flags?
No. Clicktag does not do session recordings, heatmaps, bounce rate, A/B tests, or feature flags. It focuses on web traffic, custom events, goals, funnels, retention, AI crawlers, and API analytics.
Can I filter custom events by metadata properties like in PostHog?
No. Clicktag stores up to 4,096 characters of JSON metadata per event, but metadata cannot be grouped or filtered in reports or the Stats API. Put the values you want to compare directly into the event name, up to 256 characters.
How does Clicktag measure retention without cookies or user IDs?
Clicktag counts new and returning browsers using a once-a-day return check through the browser's HTTP cache, without setting cookies or storing IP addresses. Retention reports group first visits into weekly cohorts starting on Monday and track them for up to 12 follow-up weeks, though private windows and cleared caches count as new browsers.
What are Clicktag's account limits?
A Clicktag account is free with no credit card and supports up to 50 websites. Each site can have up to 50 goals (including 2 to 6 step funnels), up to 20 API alert rules, and scheduled email reports sent to up to 25 recipients. You can also create up to 10 active management API keys (tt_mk_) per account to query date ranges up to 400 days.
