Clicktag vs Piwik PRO

Clicktag: a free Piwik PRO alternative now that Core is gone

Clicktag is a free Piwik PRO alternative for up to 50 websites, with no credit card and no cookies. You get one 4 KB script, up to 50 goals and funnels per site, and 16 months of Search Console data.

Piwik PRO folded its free Core plan into the paid Business plan, and its pricing page now starts at EUR 36 per month. If you used Core to get web analytics without paying for a full suite, Clicktag is a free replacement. You get cookieless analytics for up to 50 websites, custom events, goals, funnels, retention cohorts, Google Search Console integration and AI traffic reports, with no credit card required.

What happened to the Piwik PRO Core plan

Piwik PRO's Core plan page states: "The free Core plan will transition to the Business plan in December 2025." Visiting the old Core URL at piwik.pro/core-plan now redirects to the Business plan page, and the official pricing page lists two paid plans:

  • Business: from EUR 36 per month, with a 30-day free trial and no credit card required. It includes up to 2M monthly actions across up to 20 domains, 25 months of data retention and EU-operated cloud hosting in Sweden.
  • Enterprise: from EUR 366 per month billed annually, starting from 1M monthly actions (with unlimited monthly actions available), data retention from 25 months and global hosting options.

Business pricing starts at EUR 36 per month and rises with the number of domains and the amount of data you collect. For site owners, developers and small marketers who only wanted a clean traffic dashboard, going from EUR 0 to at least EUR 36 per month is a reason to look around.

Who needs a new tool and what to look for

If you used Core mainly to see which pages get read, where visitors come from and which traffic sources convert, you don't need a four-module suite.

When you pick a replacement, check four things:

  • Multi-site limits: many free or starter plans cap you at 1 website, so if you run a main site, a documentation site and a couple of side projects, you hit a paywall right away.
  • Conversion tracking: pageviews alone aren't enough if you need multi-step funnels or retention cohorts.
  • Search and AI visibility: organic traffic now splits between Google Search and AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, and your reports should show both.
  • Storage location and data collection: look at where the servers live and whether the tracker sets cookies or stores IP addresses.

How Clicktag replaces Piwik PRO Core for free

Clicktag is free to use. Every feature is included, there is no paid plan today, and you don't enter a credit card. You sign in with a Google account at clicktag.app and can add up to 50 websites per account. If you want to click around first, check the live demo (its numbers are synthetic sample data).

Collection runs on Cloudflare and your data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany. Clicktag sets no cookies, uses no local storage, and never stores IP addresses. Visitors are counted with a daily salted SHA-256 hash; the salt is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends, so visits can't be linked across days. Country comes from the browser's time zone, and Do Not Track requests are dropped.

Here is what comes in the dashboard:

  • Core reports: visitors, pageviews, pages, entry pages, sources, countries, devices, browsers, operating systems, UTM source, UTM medium, UTM campaign and custom events, with up to 12 filters at once. Time on page is the median of pageview durations of 5 seconds or more.
  • Funnel analytics and goals: up to 50 goals per site, funnels included. A goal is a page view or a custom event, and because goals are computed from data you already collect, creating a new goal includes your past data. Funnels track 2 to 6 steps completed in order on the same UTC day, reporting median and p90 time to convert.
  • Retention: weekly cohorts of first visits (weeks start Monday) across up to 12 follow-up weeks, counted via a once-a-day return check through the browser's HTTP cache without cookies.
  • Search Console analytics: connect Google Search Console to backfill up to 16 months of clicks, impressions, CTR, position and queries, refreshed every 6 hours for the trailing 10 days.
  • AI traffic analytics and crawlers: ChatGPT (which adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links), Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot appear as distinct sources. If your site is proxied through Cloudflare, you can also connect a read-only Cloudflare token to see verified hits from AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, which never run JavaScript.

Clicktag gives you up to 50 websites, 50 goals and funnels per site, and Frankfurt data storage for $0, without cookies or IP storage.

Moving to Clicktag from Piwik PRO

Clicktag imports history only from Simple Analytics, with no CSV or Piwik PRO import. To switch, run Clicktag alongside your Piwik PRO container for two to four weeks so you have overlapping numbers before you turn Piwik PRO off.

  1. Sign in at clicktag.app with your Google account and create your site.
  2. Copy the async script tag from Site settings > Installation. It is about 4 KB compressed (latest.js), carries data-hostname and data-verify attributes, and works with plain HTML, React with Vite, and the Next.js App Router.
  3. Verify your site so Clicktag starts storing data. If your server sends the script tag in the homepage HTML, verification works automatically; if you inject scripts only with client-side JavaScript (such as through Piwik PRO Tag Manager), verify using a DNS TXT record or a file under /.well-known/.
  4. Replace any custom conversion tags with window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback) in the browser or a JSON POST to /events from your server, then set up your goals under your site reports. See the installation docs for full details.

Clicktag or Piwik PRO: which to pick

Pick Clicktag if you want straightforward web and API analytics without a contract: free for up to 50 websites, with goals, funnels and no credit card. Piwik PRO's Business plan starts at EUR 36 a month.

Piwik PRO fits organizations that want its Tag Manager, Consent Manager or Data Activation modules in one contract, ecommerce tracking and visitor profiles, or an Enterprise contract (from EUR 366/month billed annually) with global or private cloud hosting.

FAQ

Is the Piwik PRO Core plan still available?

No. Piwik PRO's Core page states: "The free Core plan will transition to the Business plan in December 2025." The old Core plan URL redirects to the Business plan. The official pricing page now lists only the Business plan (from EUR 36/month) and the Enterprise plan (from EUR 366/month billed annually).

How much does Clicktag cost?

Clicktag is free, with no credit card required and no paid tier today. One account includes every feature and supports up to 50 websites, plus up to 10 active Stats API keys and scheduled email reports for up to 25 recipients per site.

Can Clicktag import my Piwik PRO history?

No. Clicktag only supports historical imports from Simple Analytics and does not accept CSV uploads or Google Analytics imports. Run Clicktag's 4 KB script alongside Piwik PRO for a few weeks before you turn Piwik PRO off.

Does Clicktag track custom events and outbound clicks?

Yes, through window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback) in the browser or a keyless JSON POST to /events from any server. The latest.js script does not record clicks, outbound links, file downloads or form submissions automatically, so you add a tt_event call for the interactions you want to count. Event names are capped at 256 characters, and because metadata (up to 4,096 characters) can't be grouped or filtered in reports, you should put values you want to compare directly into the event name.

What features does Clicktag leave out?

Clicktag does not offer session recordings, heatmaps, bounce rate, A/B tests, feature flags, revenue or ecommerce tracking, individual visitor profiles or white labeling. It also does not report utm_term or utm_content as dimensions, and it cannot be self-hosted.
