Clicktag vs StatCounter

Clicktag: a free StatCounter alternative with UTM tracking and goals

Clicktag is a free StatCounter alternative with UTM reports, up to 50 goals and funnels for up to 50 websites, using one 4 KB script with no cookies and no credit card.

StatCounter's free Basic plan caps you at 5,000 sessions per month and keeps your data for 14 days. If you want conversion tracking or landing page analysis on StatCounter, you have to upgrade to its paid Premium plan. Clicktag is a free website analytics tool that includes UTM reports, goals, funnels, cohort retention and Google Search Console integration on up to 50 websites, with no credit card and no cookies.

What StatCounter's free plan includes (and leaves out)

StatCounter's Basic plan costs nothing. The catch is the ceiling: it covers 5,000 sessions per month, keeps your data for 14 days and includes 0 session recordings. StatCounter counts each website visit as a session.

On Basic, visits older than 14 days drop out of your reports. You also don't get conversion tracking, paid traffic analysis, landing page analysis, visitor labels or alerts unless you move up to StatCounter Premium.

StatCounter Premium pricing

StatCounter prices its Premium plan by sessions per month, and Premium comes with 3 years of data retention. Its pricing page showed these prices in EUR when we checked:

  • 20,000 sessions per month: EUR 9/mo (or EUR 97/yr)
  • 100,000 sessions per month: EUR 29/mo (or EUR 313/yr)
  • 5,000,000 sessions per month: EUR 399/mo (or EUR 4,309/yr)

If you want session replay on StatCounter, it is sold as a separate add-on: EUR 9/mo (EUR 97/yr) for 1,000 recordings, EUR 19/mo (EUR 205/yr) for 10,000 recordings, or EUR 29/mo (EUR 313/yr) for 50,000 recordings.

What you get in Clicktag for free

Clicktag has no paid plan. Every feature is included, you sign in with a Google account, and you can look at the public demo dashboard (which runs on synthetic sample data) before signing up.

  • Campaign reports: UTM tracking for utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign is built into the main reports, alongside referrers, entry pages, countries, devices, browsers and operating systems.
  • Goals and funnels: Set up to 50 conversion goals per site from pageviews or custom events. Funnels track 2 to 6 steps completed on the same UTC day and report median and p90 time to convert. Goals are computed at query time, so a new goal applies to past data too.
  • Cookieless analytics: Clicktag sets no cookies, uses no local storage and never stores IP addresses. Visitors are counted using a daily salted SHA-256 hash, and the salt is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends.
  • Search Console and AI traffic: Connect Google Search Console to backfill up to 16 months of queries, clicks, impressions and positions. Clicktag also breaks out AI referrals like chatgpt.com, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot as distinct sources, and, for sites proxied through Cloudflare, can read AI crawler hits (such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot) through a read-only Cloudflare token.
  • Retention cohorts: Track new and returning browsers across up to 12 follow-up weeks using a once-a-day HTTP cache check instead of cookies.

Installing Clicktag takes one async script tag (latest.js, about 4 KB compressed) that you copy from Site settings > Installation. It tracks single-page apps automatically through pushState and popstate.

<script async src="https://clicktag.io/latest.js" data-hostname="example.com" data-verify="your-token"></script>

To record button clicks, signups or downloads, call window.tt_event:

window.tt_event("signup_button_clicked", { plan: "pro" });

Clicktag or StatCounter: which to pick

Pick Clicktag if you want conversion goals, funnels and UTM tracking for free, on up to 50 websites with no cookies. StatCounter adds conversion tracking only on its paid Premium plan.

StatCounter fits if you need session replay (a paid add-on), visitor labels or 3 years of data retention on Premium. Clicktag builds no individual visitor profiles: the salt behind its daily visitor hash is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends.

FAQ

Is Clicktag really free, or is there a 14-day limit like StatCounter Basic?

Clicktag is free, requires no credit card and has no paid tier today. Its reports are not limited to 14 days: retention cohorts follow up to 12 weeks and the Stats API accepts date ranges of up to 400 days. Conversion goals are included, not sold as an upgrade.

How many websites can I track in one Clicktag account?

You can add up to 50 websites per account. Each site gets up to 50 goals (including funnels), up to 12 report filters at once and scheduled email reports for up to 25 recipients.

Can Clicktag import my old StatCounter or Google Analytics history?

No. Clicktag only supports historical imports from Simple Analytics; it does not support CSV uploads, StatCounter imports or Google Analytics imports. You can, however, connect Google Search Console to backfill up to 16 months of search query data.

Does Clicktag track outbound clicks and file downloads automatically?

No. latest.js records pageviews, but no clicks, downloads or form submissions by itself. To track clicks, file downloads or form submissions, you trigger window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback) in the browser or send a JSON POST to /events from your server.

Which UTM parameters does Clicktag report on?

Clicktag reports on utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign in the dashboard and via the Stats API. It does not report utm_term or utm_content as dimensions, and event metadata cannot be grouped or filtered in reports, so put values you want to compare directly into your event names.
