Clicktag for Squarespace

Squarespace analytics with sources, goals and AI traffic, free

Clicktag adds free web analytics to your Squarespace site with no credit card and no cookies. Paste one 4 KB script into Code Injection to track AI traffic sources and up to 50 goals, then connect 16 months of Google Search Console queries.

Squarespace comes with built-in analytics, and the panels you see depend on your billing plan. If you want to track up to 50 conversion goals, build 2-to-6-step funnels, separate AI traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity, or view 16 months of Google Search Console queries next to your pageviews, you can add Clicktag to your site for free. On Squarespace Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy plans, you paste one 4 KB script into the site-wide Header field under Code Injection.

What Clicktag adds to Squarespace Analytics

Every Squarespace site has a built-in Analytics panel, though which reports you see depends on your plan. Adding Clicktag alongside Squarespace's native numbers adds one async 4 KB script and no cookies, and it fills specific reporting gaps:

  • Goal tracking for up to 50 goals per site, triggered by pageviews or custom events, with conversion rates broken down by referrer, entry page, and country.
  • Ordered funnel analytics with 2 to 6 steps completed on the same UTC day, showing median and p90 time to convert.
  • Separate AI traffic analytics showing visits from ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Perplexity, Claude, Gemini (gemini.google.com), and Copilot as distinct sources.
  • Campaign reports for utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign, with up to 12 report filters applied at once.
  • Google Search Console analytics connected right next to your traffic, backfilling up to 16 months of clicks, impressions, CTR, position, and queries.
  • Weekly browser retention cohorts for up to 12 follow-up weeks, counted via the browser's HTTP cache without cookies or local storage.

Goals in Clicktag are computed from the traffic and events you already collect, so creating a new goal immediately includes your past data.

Which Squarespace plans support Code Injection

To install an external analytics script across your whole Squarespace site, you need the Code Injection panel. According to Squarespace's Code Injection documentation, code injection is available in the Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy billing plans. The Basic plan is not listed.

Squarespace's support team can't help add or troubleshoot custom code, and checkout pages don't support code at all. Code in the site-wide Header field is injected into the <head> of every page on your site, while order confirmation and order status pages have their own Code Injection fields.

How to add Clicktag to Squarespace with Code Injection

Once you sign in to Clicktag with a Google account, you can register up to 50 websites per account with no credit card. Follow these steps to install the tracker on a supported Squarespace plan:

1. Copy your site tag in Clicktag

In the Clicktag dashboard at clicktag.app, add your domain and go to Site settings > Installation, step 1. Copy your <script> tag. Keep both data-hostname (the hostname you registered, like example.com) and data-verify (your site's public verification token).

<script
  async
  src="https://clicktag.io/latest.js"
  data-hostname="example.com"
  data-verify="YOUR_SITE_VERIFY_TOKEN"
></script>

2. Paste the tag into Squarespace Code Injection

In Squarespace, go to Pages > Website Tools > Code Injection. Paste your Clicktag script tag into the site-wide Header field. Squarespace requires JavaScript in this field to be wrapped in <script> tags, which the Clicktag snippet already is. Click Save.

3. Verify your site and check Live view

Open your website in a new tab. Because Squarespace includes the Header code in the homepage HTML the server sends, that first visit lets Clicktag verify the data-verify token automatically; Run setup check in Site settings > Installation shows whether Clicktag found the tag. Then check the Live view: hits appear within about a second, and the feed opens with the last 5 minutes of activity. You can also explore the live demo to see how sample data looks in the interface.

Tracking order confirmations and button clicks on Squarespace

Squarespace checkout pages don't accept custom code, so you cannot run analytics scripts while a shopper is typing in their payment details. However, the order confirmation and order status pages have their own Code Injection fields, and you can also fire custom events on any normal page when someone submits a form or clicks a button.

Clicktag's latest.js does not record clicks, outbound links, file downloads, or form submissions on its own. Instead, you call window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback) where you need it. Event names are cut at 256 characters, runs of characters other than letters and digits become underscores, and metadata is capped at 4,096 characters. Because metadata is stored but cannot be grouped or filtered in reports, put the value you want to compare directly into the event name.

To record an event after checkout, paste the preload queue and the event call into the Order status page field in Code Injection (gift cards, memberships and subscriptions use the Order confirmation page field instead). The queue holds the call until latest.js loads, so check in your browser's Network tab that latest.js also loads on that page. Customers can revisit the order status page, so the {.if firstPageView} and {.end} tags from Squarespace's docs limit the event to the first visit:

{.if firstPageView}
<script>
  window.tt_event =
    window.tt_event ||
    function () {
      window.tt_event.q.push(Array.from(arguments));
    };
  window.tt_event.q = window.tt_event.q || [];
  window.tt_event("order_confirmed");
</script>
{.end}

Once order_confirmed starts arriving, you can turn that event into a goal in Clicktag, or make it the final step of a 2-to-6-step funnel starting from a product page or landing page. See the custom events documentation for button click listeners and backend POST /events calls.

On Core, Plus or Advanced, run Clicktag next to Squarespace Analytics: you keep Squarespace's native order totals and add Clicktag's UTM tracking, funnels and AI referral breakdowns for free. The Basic plan doesn't include Code Injection, so Clicktag can't be added there.

FAQ

Does Clicktag work on the Squarespace Basic plan?

Squarespace's official documentation states that Code Injection is available on Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy billing plans, and does not list the Basic plan. Without Code Injection in the site-wide Header, you cannot install the latest.js script across a Basic site.

Does Clicktag track Squarespace ecommerce revenue or checkout steps?

No. Clicktag does not have revenue or ecommerce tracking, and Squarespace blocks custom code on checkout pages. You can still count completed purchases by firing window.tt_event("order_confirmed") on the order confirmation or order status page and setting that event as a goal.

How does Clicktag count visitors and returning users without cookies?

Clicktag sets no cookies, uses no local storage, and never stores IP addresses. Daily visitors are counted with a salted SHA-256 hash whose salt is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends, and weekly retention cohorts use a once-a-day check through the browser's HTTP cache.

Can I see if GPTBot or ClaudeBot is crawling my Squarespace site?

Analytics scripts in the browser never see AI crawlers like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot because those bots fetch raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. If your Squarespace domain is proxied through Cloudflare (including Cloudflare's Free plan) and verified in Clicktag, you can connect a read-only Cloudflare token in Clicktag's Crawlers tab to import 30 days of crawler hits and sync every 15 minutes with no code on the site.

What else is excluded from Clicktag?

Clicktag does not include session recordings, heatmaps, bounce rate, A/B tests, white-label dashboards or Google Analytics historical imports. It does show average scroll depth, and you can share a site view-only with up to 25 people. All included features - up to 50 sites, 50 goals per site, email reports for up to 25 recipients, and the Stats API - are free with a Google sign-in.
