Clicktag GEO guide

Generative engine optimization: how to measure GEO with real data

Clicktag is a free analytics tool that measures generative engine optimization with no credit card and no cookies: one 4 KB script for AI referral visits and up to 50 goals, plus 30 days of Cloudflare crawler hits and 16 months of Search Console data.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your pages read, cited and linked by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. You measure it across four signals: whether AI crawlers fetch your HTML, which pages get traffic from AI sources, whether those visitors convert, and how your Google Search queries shift. For the content and technical steps that go into optimizing pages, see our AI SEO guide.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Where traditional SEO aims to win a ranked slot in ten blue links, GEO aims to make your page the source an AI engine reads, quotes and links to when someone asks a question.

Measuring GEO comes down to tracking the requests AI bots make to your server and the human visits that click through from their citations.

GEO vs SEO: what changes when you measure it

Dimension Traditional SEO Generative engine optimization (GEO)
What you optimize for Ranked position in search results Citations and supporting links in AI answers
Primary crawlers Googlebot, Bingbot, Applebot, DuckDuckBot OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot
JavaScript rendering Googlebot and Applebot render JS Major AI crawlers fetch raw HTML without running JS (17 Dec 2024 Vercel/MERJ study)
Where clicks show up google.com, bing.com, duckduckgo.com chatgpt.com, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, plus Google and Direct
What you can measure Impressions, queries, position, CTR, visits, goals Verified bot hits per page, referral visits, conversion rate by source

Browser analytics scripts don't see AI crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, because they fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript.

The 4-part GEO measurement stack

1. Are AI crawlers reading your pages?

Before ChatGPT or Perplexity can cite a page, their search and user-action bots have to fetch it. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface sites in ChatGPT search and ChatGPT-User when a user asks a question. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and Anthropic uses Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User.

Because these bots don't run JavaScript, your frontend analytics tag never fires for them. Clicktag's AI crawler analytics reads crawler requests straight from Cloudflare using a read-only Cloudflare token (Zone Read and Analytics Read on any Cloudflare plan, including Free). It imports 30 days of history on connect and syncs every 15 minutes, with no code added to your site.

On the Crawlers tab, you see verified hits per bot and per page, separate from unverified requests that only claim a bot name in their user agent. You also get a blocked count for verified hits your site answered with HTTP 401, 403 or 429, so you can see right away if a firewall rule is turning OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot away.

2. Are AI answers sending you visitors?

When someone clicks a citation in an AI answer, your web analytics records the visit. In Clicktag's AI traffic analytics, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot appear as their own sources in the Sources report.

ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it displays. Clicktag reads utm_source first, then the source or ref query parameter, and then the referring hostname, so those clicks land cleanly under chatgpt.com. You can filter the report by source to see which Entry pages AI visitors land on and check their median time on page (calculated across pageviews lasting 5 seconds or more).

3. Do AI visitors convert?

Traffic numbers alone don't tell you if GEO is worth your time. In Clicktag, you can set up to 50 goals and funnels per site, matched to either a page path or a custom event like signup_completed. Funnels track 2 to 6 steps completed in order on the same UTC day, including median and p90 time to convert.

Click any goal on the Goals tab and break it down by referrer or utm_source. Because Clicktag counts each visitor under the source of their first pageview that day, you can compare the conversion rate of chatgpt.com or Perplexity visitors directly against google.com visitors. Goals are computed from data you already collect, so creating a new goal includes your past traffic right away.

4. The Google side: AI Overviews and Search Console

Google states in its AI features documentation that AI Overviews and AI Mode are features of Google Search: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

Clicks from Google AI Overviews come from Google search domains, so Clicktag groups them under google.com while keeping gemini.google.com separate. To watch how AI Overviews affect your search clicks and CTR, connect Search Console analytics in Clicktag. Clicktag backfills up to 16 months of queries, clicks, impressions, CTR and position, refreshes the trailing 10 days every 6 hours, and overlays Search Console clicks on the Google visits it measured.

Where GA4's AI Assistant channel falls short

On May 13, 2026, Google Analytics 4 added an AI Assistant default channel for users who arrive "from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok"; its rule matches the medium ai-assistant. That helps group web referrals, but it leaves three blind spots when you use GA4 to measure GEO:

  • No server-side crawler visibility: GA4 runs in the browser, so it records no hits from OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot.
  • AI Overviews are excluded: Google says the AI Assistant channel excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Referrer-less visits fall into Direct: Mobile apps, desktop clients or AI tools that strip the referrer and don't add a UTM tag land in (direct) / (none) in both Clicktag and GA4. And when ChatGPT-User fetches a page on a user's behalf without a click-through, GA4 sees nothing, while Cloudflare sees the bot hit.

A 5-step weekly routine to measure GEO

  1. Check the Crawlers tab for blocked bots. Open Crawlers -> Bots and check the blocked count for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot. Any 401, 403 or 429 responses mean your server or Cloudflare settings are turning answer engines away.
  2. See which new pages AI bots picked up. In Crawlers -> Pages, review the top 100 crawled paths and how many distinct bots read each one over the last 7 days.
  3. Filter your Sources report by AI engines. Check visits from chatgpt.com, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, and apply a filter to inspect which entry pages they open first.
  4. Compare conversion rates on the Goals tab. Open your main signup or lead goal, break it down by referrer, and check converted visitors and conversion rate for AI sources vs google.com.
  5. Check Search Console queries and CTR. Compare your Search Console impressions and click-through rate against measured Google visits to spot high-impression queries where AI Overviews may be answering the question on the results page.

FAQ

Does Clicktag show the exact prompt someone typed into ChatGPT or Perplexity?

No. A visit only carries a referrer and URL parameters like utm_source=chatgpt.com, not the prompt. Clicktag shows the AI source (such as chatgpt.com), the entry page the visitor landed on, and whether they completed your goals.

Can I track AI crawlers without adding code to my website?

Yes. If your domain is verified in Clicktag and proxied through Cloudflare (on any plan, including Free), you connect a read-only Cloudflare token under Integrations in your site's settings. Clicktag imports 30 days of crawler history and syncs every 15 minutes, with no script needed for crawler tracking.

Does Clicktag block GPTBot or other AI crawlers?

No. Clicktag reports verified and unverified crawler hits and highlights requests that returned 401, 403 or 429 status codes, but it does not block bots or modify your robots.txt or Cloudflare firewall rules.

Can Clicktag track revenue or ecommerce order values from AI traffic?

No. Clicktag does not track revenue or ecommerce cart values, and custom event metadata cannot be grouped or summed in reports. You can track checkout or signup completion rates using pageview or custom event goals (up to 50 goals and funnels per site).

What does Clicktag cost, and what are the limits?

Clicktag is free, with no credit card required and no paid plan today. You sign in with a Google account and can track up to 50 websites per account, with up to 50 goals per site, up to 12 report filters at once, and scheduled email reports for up to 25 recipients per site.
