Clicktag vs Mixpanel
Clicktag: a free Mixpanel alternative for websites and funnels
Clicktag is a free Mixpanel alternative that tracks pageviews, custom events, 2 to 6 step funnels and 12-week retention cohorts with one 4 KB script, no cookies, no credit card and up to 50 websites per account.
Mixpanel is built for product teams that identify logged-in users across sessions and devices, while Clicktag is a free web analytics tool for websites that need pageviews, traffic sources, custom events, same-day funnels and weekly retention without cookies. With Clicktag, you add one 4 KB script, sign in with a Google account and track up to 50 sites and 50 goals per site with no credit card.
Mixpanel pricing and free tiers compared
Mixpanel's free plan gives you 1M monthly events, 10K monthly session replays, up to 10 active feature flags, funnels, retention analysis and unlimited seats. Its Growth plan starts at $0 and scales up to 20M monthly events and 500K session replays with volume discounts, while Enterprise is custom. Every Mixpanel plan includes analytics, session replay, heatmaps, experiments and feature flags.

Amplitude's Plus plan also starts at $0 for the first 2M monthly events (with a credit card required) and scales up to 70M events with 2-year data retention and heatmaps. Heap's Growth plan gives you 12 months of history, Pro and Premier go through sales, and Pro sells heatmaps and session replay as add-ons; Heap publishes no prices.
What Clicktag tracks instead of user profiles
Clicktag focuses on website traffic, acquisition sources and conversion paths rather than individual user profiles. Every feature is included for free, and there is no paid plan today.
- One 4 KB script:
latest.jsloads asynchronously, needs no npm package and tracks single-page app navigation (pushStateandpopstate) automatically across plain HTML, React with Vite and the Next.js App Router. - Traffic and AI sources: reports show visitors, pageviews, entry pages, referrers, countries, devices, browsers, operating systems and UTM parameters (
utm_source,utm_medium,utm_campaign). ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot appear as separate sources. - Custom events: trigger
window.tt_event(name, metadata, callback)in the browser or send a JSONPOSTto/eventsfrom your backend without an API key. See the event tracking page for details. - Funnels of 2 to 6 steps: combine pageviews and custom events in order on the same UTC day, with median (
p50) and 90th percentile (p90) time to convert between steps. - Weekly retention cohorts: see new and returning browsers across up to 12 follow-up weeks (weeks start Monday), measured through a once-a-day HTTP cache check without cookies.
- Search Console and AI crawlers: backfill up to 16 months of Google Search Console queries, and connect a read-only Cloudflare token to see verified hits from GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot.

How funnels and goals work in Clicktag
In Clicktag, a site can have up to 50 goals and funnels combined. You create them in the Goals tab by clicking New goal, or through the HTTP API. Because goals are computed at query time from data you already collect, creating or changing a goal applies to your past data right away.
Every step in a funnel matches either a pageview (is, starts with, or contains on the path) or a custom event by its exact name, plus up to 6 filters per step for page, referrer, country, device, browser, OS or UTM parameters.

Click any goal or funnel in the dashboard to break conversions down by referrer, entry page, country, device, browser, OS or UTM parameter. Each visitor is credited to the value from their first pageview that day. Full endpoint details are in the goals and funnels docs.
How Clicktag funnels and events work
Clicktag counts daily visitors with a salted SHA-256 hash and deletes the salt shortly after each UTC day ends, so it cannot link a person's visits across multiple days.
That design removes cookies and local storage and never stores IP addresses. Coming from Mixpanel, it means three things:
- Same-day funnels only: all 2 to 6 steps of a funnel must happen in order on the same UTC day. If a visitor views
/pricingon Tuesday and firessignup_completedon Thursday, they will not count as a funnel conversion. - Event metadata cannot be grouped: Clicktag stores up to 4,096 characters of metadata per event, but you cannot group or filter by metadata keys in reports or the API. Put values you want to compare directly into the event name (up to 256 characters, using letters, digits and
_), such assignup_proandsignup_free. - Server events have a separate identity: events sent from your backend via
POST /eventsget an identity derived from your server's IP address rather than the visitor's browser, so server events cannot follow a visitor's pageviews inside a funnel or inherit their referrer and entry page.
Clicktag also does not record outbound clicks, file downloads or form submissions automatically; you add a window.tt_event call for the interactions you want to count.
Clicktag or Mixpanel: which to pick
Pick Clicktag if your main questions are where website visitors come from (including Google Search Console and AI assistants), which pages they read, how many complete a signup or checkout flow on the same day, and how weekly browser cohort analysis trends over 12 weeks. Clicktag answers those in one dashboard, free, without setting cookies.
Mixpanel fits product teams whose questions depend on persistent user identity across weeks: calling identify() after login to follow one user across mobile apps and browsers, grouping reports by high-cardinality event properties, or keeping revenue, session replays, A/B experiments and feature flags in the same tool. FAQ
Is Clicktag really free, or is there a paid tier?
Clicktag is completely free, with no credit card required and no paid plan today. One Google account can track up to 50 websites, with up to 50 goals and funnels per site.
How does Clicktag compare with Mixpanel vs Google Analytics?
Mixpanel is an event-based product analytics tool with session replay and feature flags, while Google Analytics is a cookie-based web analytics suite. Clicktag sits in between for websites: it gives you web traffic sources, Search Console queries, custom events, 2 to 6 step funnels and 12-week cohorts without cookies or IP storage.
Can Clicktag track multi-day funnels like Mixpanel?
No. Clicktag funnels require all 2 to 6 steps to be completed in order on the same UTC day, because the daily visitor salt is deleted shortly after each UTC day ends. For multi-week behavior, Clicktag provides a 12-week browser retention report that uses the browser's HTTP cache without cookies.
Can I break down custom events by property in Clicktag?
No. Event metadata (up to 4,096 characters) is stored, but reports and the Stats API cannot group or filter by metadata fields. To compare variations in charts or funnels, encode the value in the event name itself, such as plan_selected_annual.
Does Clicktag include session replay or feature flags?
No. Mixpanel's free plan includes 10K monthly session replays and up to 10 active feature flags, while Clicktag only tracks analytics, custom events, funnels, retention cohorts, Search Console data, AI crawlers and API latency.
